When it comes to do-it-yourself painting, some people don’t have a clue on how to get started. While there are many websites out there providing helpful information, it is important to get quality painting answers. We work closely with the Glidden Professional stores here in Dallas / Fort Worth and have found a great page on their website that provides all the answers you’ve been searching for when starting a painting project. We have listed some of our favorites below, but please visit Glidden’s website and their How to master your next Glidden paint project page.
Interior Painting Tips:
1.) Paint top to bottom. Start with the ceiling, then the walls and woodwork.
2.) Paint the ceiling edges with a brush, creating a border about 2″ to 3″ wide.
3.) The easiest way to paint a ceiling is with a roller and extension handle. This allows you to stand on the floor while you paint.
4.) Dip your roller in the paint tray and roll it back and forth on the ridged part of the tray.
5.) Use diagonal or zigzag strokes to get the paint on the surface. Go back over the area with longer, up and down strokes to even out the surface.
6.) When the ceiling is dry, start painting the walls. Use a brush to paint corners, ceiling edges and areas adjacent to woodwork.
7.) Use roller to paint in blocks of roughly 4 x 4 feet. Paint adjacent blocks before each previous block dries to help blend the edges.
8.) Work from the ceiling down to the baseboards. Do one entire wall or area at a time.
9.) Paint molding and woodwork with a brush. Use wide masking tape to mask off adjacent areas (e.g., window panes).
10.) Paint with the grain of the wood. Use short strokes to coat the surface with paint, then use longer, smoother strokes for an even, finished surface.
What is Sheen?
When beginning your paint project, you’ll want to consider the sheen of the paint — or the gloss level. The higher the gloss level, the shinier the appearance and the more scrubbable the finish.
There are different types of sheens for different areas of your home.
- Flat sheens are ideal for low-traffic areas such as formal dining rooms and master bedrooms. They provide a beautiful matte coating that hides minor surface imperfections. Ideal for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.
- Eggshell paints provide excellent coverage that is washable and scrubbable. They have a slightly lower sheen than satin but offer the same type of durability. Eggshell paints are ideal for living rooms, bedrooms and family rooms.
- Satin paints go a step above flats in scrubbability, providing a nice balance between washability and subtle gloss. They perform and look great in just about any room.
Semi-gloss paints ensure maximum durability. They are commonly used in children’s rooms and high-moisture areas, such as bathrooms, as well as for trim.
- High-gloss paints are highly reflective and work well for highlighting details, such as trim and decorative molding. They are also the best choice for doors and cabinets — or any area that sees a high volume of abuse.
- Ceiling flats are designed specifically for ceilings. These are usually extra spatter-resistant.
We have now created a new program at DFW Painting called, Painter for a Day. This program allows our customers to hire one of our professional painters for the day to complete a list of projects during an 8 hour timeframe for a daily flat rate of $450. This is a great way to get a lot of small painting projects done around the house all in one day. For more information please visit our Painter for a Day page by clicking on the picture below.
Company was very responsive and professional throughout the entire process. The estimator who came out was not a high pressure sales type, which was very nice not to have to deal with that. Most importantly, the workers did a GREAT job. They were very mindful of our personal belongings and making sure everything that needed to be covered was done so. We had a good number of rooms done, including some walls with very high ceilings, and their guys did great work all around. I would highly recommend the company to any friends, family and co-workers.

Православни икониHow to Choose a Paint Color to Improve Your Mood, by Marygrace Murphy. Taken from moneypit.com.
It’s a lot less expensive to do interior painting than see a psychologist, but amazingly, the benefits can be the same. Studies show that certain interior paint colors can actually reduce stress and put us in a better mood.
“Repainting is a low-cost way to greatly enhance the appearance of a home,” says Debbie Zimmer, spokesperson for the Paint Quality Institute. “And new paint colors can actually have a positive psychological effect.”
Certain colors have been shown to evoke specific feelings and emotions. Knowing this ahead of time allows you to make the best color choices.
The tone, or brightness, of a color should always be factored into color choice. Brighter tones invigorate, while those that are muted (“toned down”) tend to be more relaxing.
If your life is very stressful, you might want to repaint the rooms where you rest and relax – the family room and bedroom, for example – in a pale blue or soft green. Studies show that these colors can be very calming. If you want to create an environment that is soothing but still warm and cozy, use a color like taupe or brown.
If, on the other hand, you want to inject some energy into your surroundings, consider using yellow paint. Like splashes of sunshine, yellow walls can lift your spirits and brighten your outlook.
Apricot, cinnamon, and tangerine are also energizing colors. But be careful with reds and burgundies: These colors can literally increase heartbeat and arouse passion. Not good for the room where you pay your bills!
A do-it-yourselfer can repaint almost any room for well under $100. And that’s using the best quality paint, something that Zimmer strongly advocates.
“Top quality 100% acrylic latex paints cost more than ordinary paint, but they offer the best value,” she says. “They last longer and continue to look fresh over time.”
So if you’re feeling blue, think about repainting your walls. It will cost very little, but will likely give a big lift to your mood!
Have you heard of IdeaPaint before? Well if you haven’t, you are missing out. Idea paint is a very cool, creative paint for work, home, school or any place that you can imagine. It is described on the company’s website as, “a single-coat, roller-applied paint that turns any smooth surface into a high-performance dry-erase writing surface. IdeaPaint creates dynamic environments within corporate, educational and home settings.” In other words, the paint is actually like a whiteboard, in which you can write on and simply wipe off when you’re done or have filled up the space. It’s great for anywhere you could imagine, to jot down ideas, draw, do schoolwork, or simply be creative! The best part about it is that anything you don’t want on the wall can be gone in an instant with the swipe of your finger.
As a painting company, we love creative paints like this that are so simple to apply and have a lasting result. With this paint, you can create a coloring book in your child’s bedroom, have meetings at work with everyone jotting down their ideas on the walls, or even create a classroom where everyone can solve problems on all four walls. Even better, if you no longer want a “whiteboard” as your walls, all you have to do is simply paint over it to give yourself a new fresh look.

IdeaPaint is described as “the most flexible, durable and cost-effective dry-erase solution on the market. It can be applied to any smooth surface, outperforms and outlasts the leading dry-erase options and works better with all brands of dry-erase markers.” IdeaPaint is also formaldehyde-free which means it does not produce any harmful gases once dry as.
Idea Paint is available in CRE-8 and IdeaPaint™ HOME. CRE-8 is a water-borne paint and is available in 8 colors. IdeaPaint™ HOME is ideal for small & medium sized areas anywhere in your home. They have kits available that cover 6 sq. ft. and 20 sq. ft. of surface. These kits are useful to create message boards on your wall, on your fridge, on top of a desk, on a bedroom door, inside a playhouse, or on small areas of bedroom or playroom walls. All you have to do is use your imagination!

When time and money are in short supply, it’s hard for many consumers to think about big remodeling projects. But with a little imagination, you can quickly make big changes in the appearance of a potential customer’s home interior or exterior. Here are five ideas to promote simple “remodeling with paint,” either as a standalone project or in conjunction with a larger paint project.
Idea #1: Paint an accent wall. Instead of painting an entire room, offer the concept of painting just one wall in a different color. A so-called accent wall can add visual interest to any space and create an opportunity to introduce another hue into the color scheme.
Idea #2: Paint the area above (or below) a chair rail. If your client’s home is blessed with chair rails, think about repainting just the wall area above or below the rail. The natural break created by the trim provides a convenient boundary for the new paint color.
Idea #3: Paint just the interior windows and trim. Another option is to stick with the wall color, but paint windows, molding and trim. This can produce dramatic change in almost any room, but especially in those where the walls are painted in a neutral color like beige or off-white.
Idea #4: Paint the front door. Ask any Realtor and he or she will tell you that the front entrance is what creates the first impression about a home. By adding a fresh coat of paint to the door, you can ensure that first impression will be favorable. (Note to those who are selling a home: Repainting the front door may be the best investment ever made.)
Idea #5: Paint just a few exterior architectural details. Even if your customer doesn’t need to paint the home’s exterior for maintenance reasons, you might want to suggest they consider painting a few architectural details for appearance’s sake. Shutters are one possibility. If the home has some ornamental fretwork, flaunt it by painting the trim in a strong color that contrasts with the color of the exterior walls.
