Roller Cleaning Tips

July 20th, 2010 · Announcements

Roller Cleaning Tips by David Wirebeck – taken from American Painting Contractor, June 2010

Here are successful steps to cleaning rollers:
1.) Scrape excess paint into a paint can with the curved edge of a five-in-one scraper or putty knife.

2.) Remove cover from frame and hose out the inside of cover; if there is dried paint, take fine-in-one tool and scrape off paint.

3.) Return cover to the frame, then using a 5-gallon bucket, place the handle part of the frame into the bucket, straddling the side of the bucket with the roller part on the outside. Position yourself behind the bucket so you don’t get wet, with the hose, make the roller spin, moving the hose from top to bottom and back until the roller is clean. It will be completely clean with no excess water.

Going Green Painting Tips

June 29th, 2010 · Announcements

Green Start, Great Finish: Tips for Success by Richard Howard – taken from Painting & Wallcovering Contractor, November 2009

Getting better performance from green coatings means more than buying the right product. It can also demand a shift in application usage, including curing times, open times, color density and film thickness.

Start by familiarizing yourself with the product’s technical data. “Read the MSDS and other technical data sheets, and learn what applications are appropriate for the product,” says contractor Daniel Macris, who uses green coatings exclusively in his business.

Contact the supplier or your sales rep if you need help: “They should be willing to work with you,” Macris advises. Above all, he adds, “follow the preparation and application instructions recommeneded by the manufacturer.”

Be prepared to learn some new application techniques. Low- and no-VOC paints tend to dry quicker, this allowoing shorter working times.

Keeping a wet edge requires care, according to Perry Foreman, of Diamond Vogel.

Avoid cutting in too long before roller or spray application, advises Casey McCormick, of McCormick Paint. One quick fix is to add small amounts of water to the product, says Mitchell Stevens, Parable Painting.

Trial and error
Keep an open mind about green paints, and experiment with roller naps and spray tips to find the “sweet spot” for applying each coating, says Rocky Prior, of Southern Diversified Products.

The easy cleanup and lower odor should make up for any initial awkwardness in application, according to Michele Margotta Neary, of United Gilsonite Laboratories. Surface preparation may require a new approach if using a green coating over a conventional product. “If a deck for example, has been previously stained with an oil-based product, you will need to take that coating off all the way down to the original bare wood in order to get the biggest benefit from using a green coating,” explaining Debbie Sek of T Paul Sek Eco-Friendly Painting.

Fortunately, she notes, there are a wealth of new green prep products as well.

Painting Tips – Roller Covers

June 15th, 2010 · Announcements

One of a home owners biggest mistakes is to buy an inexpensive roller cover. They typically only have 10 thousand fibers per sq inch. A natural lambskin cover, on the other hand, can have 60 thousand per sq inch. By having more fibers it allows a greater transfer of the paint from the roller tray, meaning better coverage, less time and saves on labour. Also, if you pre-wet a lambskin cover with water first then ring it out it will hold more paint right away. The clean up on lambskin covers is not so bad and while it is more expensive, after painting wash it, store it for years and use it on future home projects. The lambskin cover cost will save you from ever having to buy a cheap, throw away cover, lessens your painting time and saves landfill space.

Friday Painting Tip of the Day

June 11th, 2010 · Announcements

Interior Painting Tip: For a clean crisp line first apply tape to area NOT getting painted, then apply a thin layer of caulking on the edge of the tape and wipe smooth. Allow 15 minutes to dry. Brush on your color, letting the paint overlap onto the tape. When finished brushing all lines remove tape slowly and you will have a beautiful paint line. Works for accent walls, wall to ceiling lines and for around trim.
